Psycho-educational assessments

for young people aged 6-25 years.

Jo is an experienced educator and psychologist with a passion for helping young people experience success in their learning environment and beyond.

Assessment focuses on identifying a young person’s strengths and vulnerabilities to inform effective decision making and generate individual recommendations to reduce barriers to learning or work performance.

Assessment is a systematic process for gaining information about a young person relevant to the reason for referral. The assessment may involve a range of processes such as:

There are 3 broad areas of assessment:

Cognitive ability

A psychoeducation assessment often involves a standardised cognitive assessment (or IQ test). More importantly than the overall score, Jo is assessing if the young person’s cognitive abilities are uniformly developed or if there are notable strengths and vulnerabilities. This gives valuable insight into how the young person thinks and processes information in the world around them.

Social and emotional wellbeing

Some difficulties in learning or in the workplace may be compounded by social, emotional or behavioural factors. A psychoeducational assessment may include questionnaires to be completed by parents, the young person and, with permission, teachers, to assess these factors. These questionnaires may be broad in scope or more focused. While not diagnostic in themselves, they can provide valuable information to inform recommendations for intervention and indicate whether further assessment is warranted.

Academic achievement

A psychoeducational assessment may include an evaluation of a young person’s level of skill development in the areas of:
• Listening comprehension
• Reading
• Spelling
• Writing and/or
• Mathematics
Together with the results of cognitive abilities, this assessment guides the development of recommendations to support a young person’s learning.
